Study On The Translation Of The Poems In Hong Lou Meng In Light Of Fuzzy Linguistics

Fuzziness is universal in all human language in the world. As a branch of linguistics, fuzzy linguistics studies the fuzziness in language and tries to reveal its inherent language laws. Scientific researches on fuzzy language can date back to L. A. Zadeh's paper about "Fuzzy Sets" published in Information and Control in 1965. In China, Wu Tieping is hailed as the pioneer of fuzzy linguistics. His masterpiece entitled Fuzzy Linguistics and a number of other papers published afterwards have aroused domestic linguists' enormous attention and enthusiasm and also encouraged them to dedicate themselves to related researches and studies. In the translation field, many scholars have adopted fuzzy linguistics to study different aspects of translation.Chinese classical poetry is characterized by its suggestiveness, subtlety and implicitness. Fuzzy beauty repeatedly appears between lines. Hong Lou Meng, considered as "encyclopedia" of Chinese culture, is a model of Chinese classical poetry because of its successful incorporating with almost all the techniques of literary merits - regulated poems, lyric meters, dramatic lyrics, thyme prose or expositions to antithetical couplets, songs, elegy, riddles and parallel prose, etc. All these verses, with high artistic value, are the indispensable part in Hong Lou Meng. Therefore the author tries to study the fuzziness of the poems in Hong Lou Meng and its translation from the perspective of fuzzy linguistics.Apart from Introduction and Conclusion, the present thesis can be divided into four chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the development of fuzzy linguistics and some concepts related to fuzzy linguistics as well as its guidance for the research of Chinese classical poems. Chapter 2 attempts a brief survey of the previous studies on fuzzy language and discusses the translation based on fuzzy linguistics. In the third chapter, fuzziness in the poems of Hong Lou Meng is illustrated with examples from three levels - linguistic, rhetorical and cultural level. And in the last chapter, great efforts have been put into the study of the specific strategies to translate fuzziness in the poems of Hong Lou Meng from the perspective of fuzzy linguistics.
