Huaer, being an important part of Chinese national music, is one of the brilliant flowers of Chinese national art and regarded as the"encyclopedia of west China". Being a type of non-material culture heritage shared by many nationalities, Huaer is a mark of spoken arts in west China, which is of great value for art appreciation and academic research.Linxia (ancient Hezhou), the source and cradle of Huaer, plays an important role in Huaer development. Based on theories on culture spreading, culture function and the relationship between human and region, the paper aims to trace the origin of huaer, examine the development of Huaer, probe into the spreading of Huaer and reveal the relationships between Huaer and natural geographical factors, human geographical factors, economic geographical factors and historical geographical factors.The paper consists of the following six parts:The first part consists of the background and significance of the paper and literature analysis of the related study.The second part introduces some related theories and discusses the effects of impetus of culture spreading and geographical environment on culture formation.In the third part, based on the definition of Huaer, types, artistic characteristics and distribution of Huaer are discussed.The fourth part, based on the description of target region, analyzes the similarities and differences between Hezhou Huaer and Lianhuashan Huaer.The fifth part is about distribution and spreading of Huaer. The formation of Huaer went through three periods: embryonic period, development period and ripen period. During the first period, nomadic melody of ancient Qiang and advanced Chinese formed the basis for Huaer. During the second period, population mobility and culture movement provided rich materials for the development of Huaer. In the third period, Huaer became ripe.The spreading of Huaer resulted from both expansion and mobility and active and passive spreading, during which human played as the medium. Therefore, during different periods, mobility of population in Linxia (mainly Hui) determined the mode and direction and Huaer geographical environment the routes include 13 land ones and 3 water ones.Part six is about the relationship between Huaer and geographical environment. Linxia, lying at the joint of Qing-Tibet plateau and Huangtu plateau, links the inner to Qing-Tibet plateau and is an important part of ancient south Silk Road, where different nationalities meet and different cultures merge. The unique geographical location, special geographical environment, changes and merging of different cultures and formation of strong culture of Hui have an important effect on formation and spreading of Huaer.
