A Study Of The English Version Of Uncle Donggie's Nirvana From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

As a special art form with dual nature, drama can not only bring the audiences lively audio-visual enjoyment on the stage but also be read by the readers as a literary work, just like fiction and poetry. However, for years, drama translation has not gained enough scholarly attention. Monographs and theses on drama translation are also limited both at home and abroad. Due to the dual nature of drama, translators are faced with a dilemma: whether to emphasize the literariness of drama, or to ensure its performability. In addition, how to evaluate a translated drama is another thorny problem.Skopostheorie, which breaks with the equivalence-based translation theory and regards translation skopos as the most important factor determining the translational action, provides a new perspective for solving the dilemma of drama translation. Besides, by advancing"translation brief"to specify the kind of translation needed and by replacing"equivalence"with"adequacy"as the criterion for translation evaluation, skopostheorie offers valuable insights to evaluate translation properly.Based on skopostheorie, this thesis carefully studies Ying Ruocheng's English version of Uncle Doggie's Nirvana and discusses the features of drama translation as well as the applicability of skopostheorie to drama translation. After analyzing the translation skopos, translation brief and translation strategies and methods used in the translated drama, the author of the thesis draws a conclusion that the translator satisfies intelligibility, speakability, individuality and brevity adequately by adopting corresponding translation strategies and methods, and finally fulfills the translation skopos.
