On E-C Film Subtitle Translation From The Perspective Of Skopos

Nowadays, the increasing foreign films, especially English films introduced into China. To make Chinese audiences easily appreciate the films, subtitle translation becomes an urgent task. However, film subtitle translation is far from being satisfactory. In terms of theory, film subtitle translation has received little scholarly attention. In terms of practice, the quality of film subtitle translation is yet to be improved.In terms of Skopos, film subtitle translation is a purposeful activity. The Skopos (purpose) of film subtitle translation is to provide, within the constraints of time and space, a well-translated subtitle which can contribute to a good understanding of what is happening on the screen. To fulfill the Skopos (purpose), translator should follow certain principles and strategies, meanwhile pay more attention to the cultural factors.Based on the Skopos, applying it to film subtitle by discussing principles, strategies, and cultural factors, this tentative study on E-C film subtitle translation is both theoretically and practically helpful.
