Francois Rebelais is a great writer as well as an outstanding educational thinker during the French Renaissance. His ideas in his Gargantua et Pantagruel not only has a great effect on his native land, but also on Western Europe, even the whole world. Since the Middle Ages, the feudal society greatly promoted theology and education was out of line with the natural world and the human nature. However, Rebelais 's thought completely assured the vital role education had played in nurturing new talents, enriching educational activities, exploring the law of development. As a result, Rebelais got many achievements in educational system and methods and set up a solid foundation for the formulation of present educational system and the individually development of educational course. Although his thoughts unavoidablely has drawbacks and historical limitations .Its progressive meaning is undeniable.This paper consists of four parts, the first part tells Rebelais's life and works. The second part exposes Rebelais's educational thoughts. The third part describes Utopian Abbey of Thelema. The fourth part makes an evaluation on Rebelais's educational thoughts.
