Chang Xueliang is an important figure in Chinese modern history. All his life has close connection with a lot of significant events in Chinese modern history. Since 1980s, researches on Chang Xueliang have been gradually carried out and till now substantial achievements have been gained. As far as these great successes are concerned, they focus mainly on historical events and issues related with Chang, while researches on Chang's educational thought and its practice seem rather thin. The author suggests that much attention on Chang's educational thought and its practice should be paid and it is necessary to make further research. It's paid to grasp Chang's educational thought exactly, which is not only helpful for us to understand his whole life thoroughly, but also meaningful as reference for "rely on education to rejuvenate the nation" advocated now. Considering that, basing on plentiful historical materials and research achievements, I contempt to make further explorations on Chang's educational thought, hoping that it will make bits of contributions to the researches on Chang Xueliang, as well as Chinese modern educational history.The thesis is divided into four parts to expound Chang's educational thought and its practice.The first part deals with the origins of Chang's educational thought, which contains dual influence of Chinese and western culture, objective influence of some important figures, direct influence of anti-Japanese consciousness.The second parts devotes to the contents of Chang's educational thought. The author analyses and concludes the issue thoroughly on the following aspects, the aim of education, the principle of education, the policy of education and Chang's outlook on female education. From them, we can find the systematicness of Chang's educational thought.The third part discusses Chang's educational practice. The author makes use of full and accurate historical materials and makes a complete statement about Chang's educational practice. Higher education, middle and primary education, military education and social education are discussed one by one.The fourth part evaluates Chang's educational thought and its practice. On the basis of above three parts, the author summarizes the characters of Chang's educational thought and analyses its influences, giving an objective, just and fair evaluation.
