The research focuses on the four great novels written by Hermann Hesse: Beneath the Wheel (1906), Demian(1919), Siddhartha(1922), Narcissus and Goldmund(1930). Trying to demonstrate the characters'growth path of'how to become oneself', the research analyzes the subject of Spiritual Growth in Hermann Hesse's inner world. The Spiritual exploration includes puzzling and confusion, pursuit and obtains, and the possibility of self-realization. This research begins from the angle of growth subject, employing the methods of psycho-analysis, biography as well as historical culture research, and that we place the author's spiritual world in the background of time, society and cultural setting, researching the significance of the author's spiritual exploration.This paper includes four main parts, namely the four chapters. The first chapter focuses on the work Beneath the Wheel,the hero Hans under the depression of vanity, initiated his self-conciousness in the desire for individuality and independence, but prematurely stifled. His story showed an unfinished road of growth. The second chapter focuses on the work Demian. The character Sinclair guided by others, recognizing the real essense of the world , began to question the tradition and faced up to himself and to obtain an independent personality. This is a process of self-maturity. The third chapter focuses on the work Siddhartha ,with the same name, the main character from the penance, to secular life in order to find a real self, and finally to the emotional experience of the individual'self'and the eternal unity of self, arrived at full clarity. The forth chapter focuses on work Narcissus and Goldmund, the sentimental Goldmund was guided by rational Narcissus in the street life experiencing females and death. In the end, he saw the eternal mother in the statuary arts, and found his spiritual home as well. In his aesthetic practice, Hesse continuously explored the possibility of self-realization, not only to display the pursuit of the spirit home of his own, but also supplied valuable experience for other's exploration of self.
