In terms of material comfort, the current improvement in the human condition is unprecedented. The same improvement cannot be said however, about the natural, social and spiritual environment which mankind relies upon. Writers who have a highly developed sense of social responsibility have, in their literary works, frequently warned mankind about the impending crisis. Donna Morrissey (1956 - ) a Canadian Newfoundland contemporary writer is one of them and has been called"The Newfoundland Thomas Hardy"and"Newfoundland's Annie Proulx".The dissertation analyzes the novel Sylvanus Now published in 2005 from the perspective of ecocriticism. Based on the perusing the original English language text, this thesis interprets carefully and probes deeply the novel. It's purpose is threefold: First, to peruse the novel in order to show the vivid story with it's distinct features, it's full-bodied local characteristics and the unique artistic skills of the novel. Second, to analyze how the novel describes the natural, social and spiritual ecological condition of Newfoundlanders in the mid-20th century through unique characterization and a moving story. Third, to understand that the novel reflects the author's unique eco-consciousness and demand by showing the man and nature relationship, man and man relationship and man and self relationship. It is hope that the study not only introduces and analyzes a distinctive and successful literature work for domestic readers, and provides a reference for students of ecological literature writing and criticism, but also arouses people's awareness level of the imminent and widespread ecological problems we are all facing.
