Research Of Walton's Viola Concerto And Its Interpretation

William Walton, one of the most distinguished composers of the 20th century, whose artistic creation was full of personal color and geographic features. Moreover, his viola concerto occupies an important status in solo works.The whole dissertation is composed of three chapters--exordium, text andepilogue. In exordium, you can get a rough idea of the development of the arts of viola from 19th to 20th century as well as significance and influence of Walton's viola composition; thus, the importance of this work will be further explained. The first chapter based on the view of musical history gives a comprehensive description about composer's biography, music style and creation background. Both the second and the third chapter are the key parts of the dissertation, and the second chapter aims at anatomizing musical structure of Walton's viola concerto by means of form and analysis, so that readers can understand the musical structure and form of the work. There is a comparison of Walton's viola concerto between the edition of 1926 and the revised edition of 1961 in the second part of chapter two. We may have a further comprehension of composer's intention and musical language by comparison. Research on performing in chapter 3 is the most characteristic part of the dissertation; firstly, it focuses on the musical detail and skillful traits of playing which derived from writer's own experience of this viola concerto, furthermore, comparison of essential playing editions and styles and features of every viola masters are adopted in the research of performing the viola concerto.The dissertation takes the form of combination of analysis on works and research on performance. Research on famous movements of Walton's viola concerto is also associated with some previous achievements. In the first place, it starts from the music text, finding the structures and the inner logic of the music. At the same time, it takes that as a foundation and elaborates on my point of view systematically by analyzing the individual playing art and the treatment of the music, by enjoying and discussing the editions played by great masters. We may conclude the logic of music playing from it and show the close relations between music itself and the way of playing in order to provide our readers with some helpful references.
