Research Of The Urban Problem In Edward Yang' Films

As a famous director, Edward Yang who comes from Taiwan had been found that his Knowledge system was based on both oriental and occidental culture. In his films, the unique deep tragic implication had been shown with the distinctive pursuit for beauty, the deep consideration on the ultimate value and significance of life, and the compassionate feelings to the characters in lives in his works. As an director understanding very well the identity of film and manipulate all kinds of film essence,Edward Yang was also a heterodox in the traditional circumstances. He always tries to guide our people who live in the city searching for light but it's the most difficult question of human being. So we can always find all kinds of problems in his films, for both the audience and himself.Even he couldn't provide us exact answers for all those problems, we still identified him as an excellent thinker in our epoach. Jacques Aumont said, although the film itself couldn't change the true world, but it could cause arguments, provide suggestions , and touch our hearts.The principal film theories that have been developed are two types: art-whole theory and real-world theory. Examples of the first are those of Eisenstein and Pudovkin, which concern the relations between cinematic parts and wholes; examples of the second are those of Bazin and Kracauer, which concern the relation of cinema to reality. Especially, Eisenstein and Bazin's theories have been proved to be the most influential theories, arguably the best, and probably the most complete one.The whole paper is based on a macroscopic commentary to Edward Yang's works. We try to dig deeply out the philosophy of his films and integrate with the two mentioned theories. In all his life,Edward Yang committed to resolve the urban questions, and he also created the arts based on the truth. The ultimate objective of this paper is to probe into the proper develop model of Chinese film industry in the new century.
