The Study On The "Verb+shang" Structure And Relevent Issues

In this paper, we will use both grammatical and syntactic perspectives and by means of exemplification and explanation, conduct a both synchronic and diachronic research into the "Verb+shang" Structure based on the theories of structuralism, grammaticalization and cognitive linguistic. Except for the introduction and the conclusion, this paper consists of four chapters below:In chapterâ… , based on relevant research hitherto, we will divide the meanings of "V+shang" into three categories:directional meaning, consequent meaning and dynamic meaning. And make a specific investigation of each type of "V+shang" in semantic and sentence. As the problem of the classification made by the predecessors of "V+shang" was too detailed, we will make a new classification on the consequent meaning of "V+shang".In Chapterâ…¡, we will Study the grammaticalization process of "V+shang". from five historical periods, we study the meaning's changing of "shang". And we will also study about the formation and development of the structure "V+shang". We will make a detailed description of the development of "V+shang". On the aspect of the reason of grammaticalization, like the most of the directional structures, is the function of conceptual metaphor and re-analysis. Metaphor led to the emptiness of meanings. And re-analysis led the structure to move from the structure of "V+V" to the structure of "V+C".In Chapterâ…¢, we will study the symmetry and symmetric of the structures of "V +shang" and "V+xia". We will describe the performance of asymmetricat at different stages of grammaticalization of the two structures. And we will use the theory of prototype and metaphor which belongs to Cognitive Linguistics, to make some explanations.In Chapterâ…£, we will mainly compare with the similar structures and the structure "V+shang". "shang" has the meanings of " close" and " kai" has the meaning of" close". They have the opposite meanings. Both " shang" and " kai" can express " to start and continue". And both the directional " shang" and " qilai" can show the meaning of "The displacement from bottom to top". Dynamic " qilai" can also express " tostart and continue". But it is not free to replace among the three stuctures. That is because of the small differences of semantic and also the impact of pragmatic factors...
