As a flag of Chinese film, Zhang Yimou's best contribution to Chinese and world film is his universal understanding on color and its usage. However, the most critical point to Zhang's film by professional peers and overseas is also of his visual aesthetics of color construction than that of content. This study merged color with image and proposed theory of color imagery to researching the relationship of using color and expressing ideas, and excavate the unique and pity of Zhang's films, and provide an objective and new perspective.The study elaborated research status of Zhang's film in ideas, culture and film discourse (especially color discourse) as an introduction:Theory of color imagery and theory of film color imagery were arisen, elaborated systematically theory of color imagery and concept of color imagery, and elaborated their essential factors and formation mechanism(chapter one); Based on it, this paper investigated construction and righteousness principle of color imagery in Zhang's film, analyzed systematically and comprehensively sixteen representative films of Zhang Yimou from 1984 to 2009 by work analytic method with the angles of "color". "image" and "meaning", and discussed their formation significance (chapter two):Analyzed the typical characteristic of Zhang's film color imagery from different angles, and discussed Director Zhang's ideological level and the esthetic pity(chapter three); confirmed common sense of theory of color imagery of film by analogous analysis between Zhang and other foreign and native directors. Color in film is processed with subjective feeling which has many-personalized features, but at the same time it has some common features (chapter four): interpreted the value of Zhang's color image in details. which included three aspects: aesthetic psychological of the audiences. other directors'film creative activities. expression of camera language in film and others, which were the factual affect of creating process of color imagery (chapter five). Finally, the paper summarized Zhang's color imagery uniqueness and pities in usage, pointed out that the real problem is not the form bigger than the content, but rather seeks to promote artistic and commercial's perfect combination. If the Chinese films can achieve the harmony between form and content, the aesthetic taste of the public can also be improved positively.This study expanded a new possibility in application for color art in film, excavated emerge mechanism of color imagery in artistic works, especially color application in films. Systematically interpreted elements and the formation mechanism of the color imagery theory and the film color imagery theory from the aesthetic theory for the first time. Analyzed systematically and comprehensively the films of Zhang Yimou by work analytic method from the angles of color imagery for the first time. It will provide a new fundamental research perspective for study Zhang's film. However, it will not only good for the mass film aesthetic education and other film maker's color creation, but also taking advantage of further integration development between aesthetic psychology.
