Faithfulness is a topic that has been discussed for more than a thousand years. Although it has become a common sense that faithfulness is the cardinal principle in translation, people still have misunderstandings about the concept of faithfulness thus disputes are caused. In the first chapter, the author will review some scholars' descriptions of translation, from which their perspectives of "faithfulness" can be figured out. In the second chapter, the author will modify some misconceptions of "faithfulness" in the past and put forward her own understanding of "faithfulness". In the third chapter, the author introduces some challenges on the criterion of faithfulness and points out the unreasonable points in their talk about faithfulness. In the last chapter, the author reiterates the significance of enhancing the status of the criterion of faithfulness in reality. In both translator-training and translation market, it is urgent to stress the criterion of faithfulness to regulate translators and translators-to-be.
