In recent years, grammar academic circle has paid close attention to the research of the grammatical meaning of function words. After years of exploration, grammar academic circle has achieved fruitful result and also formed diversified studying methods about the research on the function word. Lu Jianming and Ma Zhen claim semantic background analysis is an important means to explore the grammatical meaning of function words. This thesis selects adversative words and expressions (a class of function words) as the objects, dose analysis about the semantics background of every word, and discuss how to apply the semantic background analysis in Chinese language teaching as a second language.This thesis includes six chapters. Its concrete contents are as follows:Chapter one is introduction, introducing the object, the purpose and significance, theoretical background, research methods and the source corpus.Chapter two introduces the present situation of the adversative words and expressions and semantic background research.Chapter three reveals the semantic backgrounds of the commonly used adversative words and expressions. First of all, it has a semantic definition to the adversative words and expressions, then turns to the semantic background description of the the respective adversative conjunctions and adverbs.Chapter four analyzes the problems for students to learn adversative words and expressions. It proves that the lack of semantic background knowledges is an important reason caused learning problems and bias.Chapter five discuss how to apply the semantic background analysis in Chinese language teaching as a second language.The last part is the concluding section, summarize the main points of this article and follow-up study.
