"But"has been used very often in English, while its part-of-speech, usages, and corresponding expression are also vitally complicated. And to the Chinese learners whose mother tongue is English, it is greatly difficult to identify and express the meaning of"but"exactly and idiomatically.In this thesis, I summarize the meaning and usages of the adversative conjunction"but", and define the relationship of conjunction. On the basis of it, 5 ways of expressing marks of"but"are told:"A,但是B","虽然A,但是B""无论A,都B""除非A,否则B""要不是A,就B". Besides, the zero forms are also introduced.In conclusion, the adversative conjunction"but"in English and typical conjunctions in Chinese compare from the aspects of the semantics,syntax and pragmatics."But"is compared with Chinese typical conjunctions such as"但是,可是,然而,虽然……但是……,只是,不过"and so forth. Common places are found out and differences are distinguished, which will provide and support Teaching Chinese As Foreign Language (TCFL).
