As one of the great masters of the Russian literary, Gogol's novel is undoubtedly the representative of his glorious achievements. His dramatic works although not as many as nonels, but there are two plays can be regarded as the representative of Gogol's drama, "Imperial Envoy" and "Marriage". And "Imperial Envoy" is regarded as the best representative of Gogol's dramatic works, because it described Russian dignitaries'sickness and ignorance by bitter irony. Lao She's literary works also have been divided into two parts, novels and dramas which both have shown a unique charm. In his works, there is a play written in the year of 1956 called"Looking over to Chang'an in West". Although it is not as famous as "Teahouse" and "Longxu Ditch", but it has still shown one aspect of Lao She's creation. When we open "Imperial Envoy" and "Looking over to Chang'an in West", we will find that there are all kinds of connections between the two works: from the dramatic structure to the descriptions of characters and from dramatic conflicts to the plots. These two plays have so many similarities. It can be said, "Looking over to Chang'an in West" demonstrates the Russian literature, especially the realistic literature affecting Lao She which represented by Gogol.Lao She's known for humor and Gogol is regarded as a master of irony. In these two dramatic works, the two masters are making different ironies in their distinctive styles and writing ways. These two works reveals surprising similarities. This paper will discuss the differences and similarities between the two plays by making comparison and researching from several aspects. Therefore, the understanding and interpretation of Lao She and Russian literature, is not only helpful for us to make further comprehension to Gogol's dramatic works, but also important to Chinese literature research. "Looking over to Chang'an in West"and "Imperial Envoy" as Lao She and Gogol's dramatic masterpiece, the analasis and comparision with these two works have great significance. This paper analyses and comprehends these two plays in the way of social and historical studies, cultural studies, and text reading in the view of the world literature. And in order to make better interpretation and analysis, this paper also sorts out some impacts on Lao She made by Russian literature. This paper analyses from three aspects. In Chapter One, it made brief arrangments of the impacts on Lao She made by Russian literature, discussing the connections between Gogol's and Lao She's works and the reasons for their similarities. In the second part, it analyses the dramatic structure, making analysis and comparison from character and plot settings. The third part focuses on the similar wrting style and the different satires, analyzing the different ironies as well as the reasons for the dfferences.Russian literature has a profound impact on the development of Chinese literature which has started from the time of May 4th Movement. Lao She, as an important writer in modern Chinese literature, his experiences have given him a unique literary creation. As he has been studying in the UK, Lao She's works have shown a strong British flavor, and the kind of British humor has always been adhering to his works. However, from 1930s, Lao She's literary creation has undergone great changes, which can be said that this change made this man as the "People's Artist". From this period, Lao She began to focus on the fates of ordinary people, Concerning people's livelihood at the foot of the social ladder. This change came from the influx of Russian realism represented by Gogol and the impact on him. Gogol's "Imperial Envoys" is a well-known dramatic work. Although the five-act play was not long, but it was famous for its plot and satire in which the ugly and ignorant of bureaucrats and aristocrats characters have been the rael classic scences. Lao She's drama "Looking over to Chang'an in West" is also a five-act play, its plot ideas have the same purpose as "Imperial Envoys". It also describes a liar fraud in official circles. While this drama works doesn't have the reputation as "Teahouse"and "Longxu Ditch", but it also hints the social harm caused by bureaucracyin realism. This similarity is not by chance. These two works have many similarities in the dramatic structure. But at the same time, different times and cultural backgrounds as well as the purposes of the creative minds caused the differences between expressions and further meanings. "Looking over to Chang'an in West"and "Imperial Envoys", they both use the structure of novel which described in the weakening of time and space meanwhile emphasizing the characters, so that promote the emergence of conflicts and dramatic story by the characters. "Looking over to Chang'an in West" and "Imperial Envoys",the two plays have a similar form of arrangement, that is "flat novel" type of drama. This form is rarely seen in drama writing. Because drama lies in the dialogue as the main factor, and limited by the space, the characters' movements are often limited. But in these two plays, we can find a way of writing as nonels whose dialogue and action coming out at the same time.Gogol and Lao She are masters of literature, their work represents the style and quality in certain era, providing a new paradigm for the literatura development. Enduring charm of the two writers and their works, their influence will continue. At the same time, their unique minds and styles provide a blueprint for learning and reference. From the comparison and analysis of their work, we are able to understand the impact of intercultural exchange and the wisdom of sparks generated by a continuation. For their works, we will continue to read, their spirit and creative ideas are worthy of our inheritance and development. It should be said, till now, their works are still our guidance.
