This is a translation report based on an English-Chinese translation practice of the first part of Section One of the academic works Teaching and Researching Reading. The source text selected aims to explore the nature of reading abilities in L2 reading, including five parts:purposes for reading, defining fluent reading comprehension, describing how reading works:components of reading abilities, synthesising research perspectives:models of reading, and conclusions.Academic translation should follow the three principles of faithfulness, readability and academic convention.According to the linguistic distinction that English is hypotactic whereas Chinese is paratactic, the author attempts to solve the translation difficulties such as nominalization, passive voice and long and complicated sentence under the guidance of pragmatic translation theories based on Nida’s functional equivalence,Reiss’ and Nord’s German functionalism and Newmark’s communicative translation on informative text. The author also explores the application of some translation strategies and techniques, namely, literal translation, domestication, division, conversion, addition and deletion, etc.,to ensure the translated version an idiomatic target text, with the hope that it would provide a reference for the translation of such academic texts in the future. This report is composed of five chapters. The first chapter gives a description of the purpose, the significance and the process of this project.Chapter Two is source text analysis, including the language feature and the typology analysis.Chapter Three analyzes the pragmatic translation theories and academic translation principles applied in this translation.Chapter Four focuses on case study with specific strategies and techniques applied in the E-C academic translation. The last chapter,Chapter Five draws a conclusion on the translation gains, deficiencies and improvements.
