This is a project report on translation of Teaching and Researching Translation, a professional theoretical monograph written by the translation theorist and practitioner Basil Hatim. The translation project is an excerpt of chapter7"register-oriented research methods" and chapter8"the pragmatics turn in research" from section two "research models". The source text systematically introduces the relevant theories and research models in Translation Studies, which could enhance theoretical and practical qualities of MTI (Master of Translating and Interpreting) students. Problems in the translation process mainly consist of understanding of the original semantic meaning and syntactic structure, as well as the transference of the information from the source text to the target text in an exact, natural and fluent way. The theoretical guidance comes from Peter Newmark’s text typology theory, communicative translation and semantic translation strategies, with specific translation methods adopted to transfer long and complicated sentences. For example: addition, deletion and conversion of words; sequencing and inversion; division and combination. To illustrate these methods, analyses of examples are also provided. To sum up, proper theoretical basis, solid bilingual knowledge, relative professional reserves and strong writing ability are indispensable qualities in the making of a translator which need steady accumulation.
