The late 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century witnessed the mounting of various art schools. With the flag of modernism, artistic creativity reached unprecedented prosperity. As a giant of culture, German philosophy and art made its influence on the world. German expressionism in the early 20th century developed the postimpressionism style originated from France and formed the unique art style with the German national spirit. After World Warâ…¡, a number of artists who were born around 1945 inherited the early German expressionism. Through tracing the memory of German religion, national history and spirit, they made in-depth self-criticism standing at the high level of philosophy on the origin of German bellicosity caused by Wotan spirit and on the national political virtue, which led to the appearance of the neo-expressionism different from of the early expressionism. Represented by artists as Immendorff, the neo-expressionism artists expressed strong criticism and reflection on German politics and social reality. Meanwhile, the artists expressed deep sense of suffering and tragic spirit on the fate of their country and nationality.
