This paper tries to delve into The Biography of Yue Fei against the background of the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty from many angles and many sides. Originated in folklore, ancient drama plays, novels, and notes, The Biography of Yue Fei was rearranged and compiled by Qian Cai and Jin Feng in the Qing Emperor Kangxi years and is the representative of biographies about Yue Fei. So it plays a significant role in spreading and shaping stories about Yue Fei and becomes the final version of such stories circulated among the folk since the Song Dynasty. It has been published for many times and nearly becomes well-kwon to everyone. Compiled in the special historical environment of the early Qing Dynasty, it has its own social significance. As a historical novel, it makes a new development in dealing with historical materials and methods of narration. Therefore, studing this novel will help us not only understand this novel better, but understand the historical novel more comprehesively and profoundly.This paper is divided into three chapters.Chapter One elaborates that the dynastic succession in the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty had a huge impact on the then scholars, and the social environment and prevailing creative principles affected the structure, content and values of this novel. And then this paper points out that the author wanted to disclose the social enviroment of the early Qing Dynasty, vent his own depression and discontent, seek the spiritual way and moralize and save the people by writing this novel.Chapter Two represents that as a historical novel which combines other similar stories about Yue Fei of various times, The Biography of Yue Fei is bound to borrow some creative experience from historical-biography literature and novels of similar theme and style. Compared it to The History of the Song Dynasty and studying how the author chose historical materials, we can grasp his deep thoughts and feeling more clearly; compare it with The Popular Romance of the Rejuvenation of Song Dynasty, we can acquaint ourselves with the deep background of the development and change of this novel; in contrast to The Stories of the Yangs, we can know how novels of describing general class made progresses in describing characters, war scenes, etc.; we can understand the change of this novel vertically, and clearly catch on values and the author's creative approaches in this novel by counting how the author learn from others'and creat a new way to represent characters and this story.Chapter Three focuses on this novel itself and analyzes the text detailedly from aspects of narrative perspective, narrative structure and narrative rhythm. The Biography of Yue Fei portrays an immortal literary and artistic image, Yue Fei, who became a household national hero, and makes his story handed down from generation to generation. Compared to previous similar novels, this novel develops in narration, because it has an omniscient narrative perspective and uses many effective means to set suspenses to enhance the dramatic effect.
