It is commonly known that the United States is a kind of smelter in which various kinds of people, white, black, yellow, brown, etc they live together in the country, among whom the black people have gone through a long and tough way to stick up for their proper and equal rights in the history of America. And even up until now, through the development of the whole society, the main and unitary situations of the black are still inferior to those of the white people. But Barack Obama, the hybrid of the white and black, renovates the record of the success of the black people in the presidency for the first time in American history. The reasons that build up his triumph include not only the conditions of policy and economy in the United States, but also his excellent and successful behavior in the public speeches. So, the wisdom hiding in the speech he delivered is worth studying and researching in a much deep and profound way. This whole thesis can generally be divided into three parts. In the introduction part, the author mainly studies on some of the conceptional fields that can be involved in the body of the thesis: the conceptions, theories, study objects and development of the speech, style and stylistics. Besides this, the life and political course of the orator of this speech, Barack Obama, was also mentioned, which is also the cultural and political background of the speech. In the body of the thesis, the author probes into the speech characteristics from two perspectives clearly and systematically: language description and rhetorical devices. And furthermore in the first perspective, there are analysis of features and effects of the language applied at four different levels: phonological level, lexical level, structural level and textual level. As for the rhetorical devices, the author studies on them from different kinds of techniques employed, including simile, metaphor, repetition, parallelism and rhetorical questions, etc, and summarize and analyze them in the structures, language features and the impacts they produce. In the conclusion part, the whole research results are summarized and call back with the initial part. The author values the behaviors of the orator in the public speech objectively as well as the rein of language and the accurate use of rhetorical devices. And then put forward the limitation of the thesis in its study and the prospective expectations for it.The language of public speech on one hand is the written language with the thought and ideas considered carefully before hand; and on the other hand it's kind of spoken language delivered by the conversation during the process. Through the analysis, we may find that the language of speeches is much more formal than the daily conversations with compact structure, clear logic and precise design. And also it obtains the features of spoken language with the facilitations of soundless tools, such as postures, gestures and eye expressions, etc. Besides that, the speech can even be adjusted to the feedback of the audience on the spot of the delivering it. The accurate employment and supplement of language sentence structures and rhetorical devices can enhance the effect and significance of the public speech. So, after the analysis, the author holds the opinion that these two elements are most helpful and indispensable to an excellent and successful speech.
