A Study To Metaphor Of Shakespear's The Tempest

The Tempest is Shakespeare's masterpiece in his later years. After decades of weather-beaten years, Shakespeare had the the final views on humanism. The expected glory is not always so perceptive, humanism let Shakespeare feel helpless and unwilling when faced with reality. this embarrassment between dream and reality threw Shakespeare into a dilemma. Ordinary expression is feeble when faced with this embarrassing mood. He always hovered between the efforts and helpless because the regret of that——"the words fail to express the meaning".So Shakespeare chosed another narrative way——metaphorical narrative.Aristotle considered the good use of metaphor as a linguistic genius. In literature, the use of metaphor is the launch of metaphorical narration. The thought of Shakespeare's works is very rich,because Shakespeare had used the metaphorical narration. In The Tempest which is the greatest work of Shakespeare, he used the metaphorical narration in many ways. He not only mastered the language skills to reach a superb artistic realm, but also expressed his intense thinking through the metaphorical way and described the possibilities of existence with his works. The works of writers and their painstaking are mainly present in these metaphors.The Tempest is the results of using metaphorical narration.There are several reasons for its success,but the metaphor is more important than any other aspects,It's a metaphorical drama,it's a vehicle of Shakespeare's complicated emotion to humanism. In the course of narration,he placed his complex feelings on different noumenons which constitute The Tempest,for example diction,image and narration, etc. Shakespeare placed his feelings on different objects through the metaphor of diction,image and narration.So that the readers could produce tension of language when reading, on the basis,they can achieve the purpose of understanding.In this paper,I will study the metaphor of Shakespeare's The Tempest on the diction,image and narration.On the metaphor of diction,analysing the intension of independent metaphor and the whole metaphor which under the surface of rhetoric.Shakespeare waked up the reader's subconscious by using of familiar things.Then the complex emotional could be expressed by the metaphorical way.This not only showed Shakespeare's superior skill, but also achieved the narrative purpose.On the image,Shakespeare used it with traditional way,At the same time he broadened it.The Imageable metaphor based on the to readers'traditional understanding to the meaning,Then it can show further meaning, realizing the metaphorical narration under the image,in the last the metaphor mixed the image together perfectly. Narrative metaphor is the aspect which show Shakespeare's genius, Shakespeare used the metaphor not only on the plot but also on the layout and the structural arrangement.He used the metaphor throughout all the text of The Tempest,which more these several metaphorical approach were bleneded together perfectly,so Shakespeare wrote the great work, The Tempest.Metaphor has been widely accepted today. As a rhetorical device,metaphor is a process that project the objects, thoughts and feelings who realized into the entirely different object,image, symbol or phrase. Metaphor permeates all areas of language and has a rich ideological course, it has played an important role in modernism. Metaphor has transfered from the peripheral position of modifing discourse to the center of understanding humanity. For Shakespeare metaphor is a mode of thinking more than a kind of rhetoric way.We always be shocked by the complex connotation when read The Tempest because the metaphorical way of thinking run through all the text . Why The Tempest could be unfailing in a literary history for centuries? An important reason is that Shakespeare used a metaphorical narrative.
