A Study On The Aesthetic Thoughts Of Wang Sengqian's Calligraphy Theories

Wei-Jin mien which is featured as the subjects of human, spiritual consciousness and its aesthetic standard that is abundant in living rhyme, nature and elegance have a significant impact on the Southern Dynasties'aesthetics. At the same time, this aesthetic standard of the times is different from the Wei and Jin Dynasty's in ideology, philosophy, aesthetics, literature and arts, literary and artistic styles.This unique aesthetic characteristic of the Qi- Liang Dynasties in the literature and arts lie in opposing the Wei-Jin Dynasties'so-called elegance which is beyond the form, color, and is in accordance with the absolutely ideal personality and the beauty which is beyond the mundane. Advocating and practicing "light extravagance", exciting the senses or imagination, gorgeous "Palace" literature, pursuting of the gorgeous rhetoric of the colorful and pleasing aesthetic, while in the area of calligraphy, it pursuits of formal aesthetic in theory and practice which highlights and appeals to the people's enjoyment of the senses . Under the influence of the aesthetic trends and aesthetic traits, Wang Sengqian put forward the following aesthetic theories in his academic writings like: affection, thoughts, minds, hand, painting brush, vitality, rhyme, talents and diligence, spirits and forms. In these groups of aesthetic concepts ,Wang Sengqian emphasized the affection and thoughts in the process of Chinese calligraphy creation ,the harmonious relation between minds, hand and painting brush positively affected Chinese calligraphy creation, the aesthetic characteristic of Chinese calligraphy which achieved vitality and rhyme, in the aesthetic theories of talents and diligence, spirits and forms, Wang Sengqian appreciated the subject's talents, endowments, verve and charm which are also existed in Chinese calligraphy. However, something intrinsic which was subjective and spiritual couldn't be attained from diligence, but the subject's talents and charm couldn't break away from diligence and forms. It showed that Wang Sengqian's theories were philosophical and dialectical.The writer tried to explore something new and meaningful which was based on interpreting Wang Sengqian's calligraphy and aesthetic theories andAncient Chinese scholars', focusing on the relations between affection, thoughts, minds, hand and painting brush, borrowing Xie He's painting theory of living spirits and charm , who was born in the Southern Dynasty, to explore Wang Sengqian's calligraphy and aesthetic theories. Taking advantage of the comparisons between Xie He's painting theory and Wang Sengqian's aesthetic theories to interpret Chinese calligraphy as well as aesthetic theories. And I discovered a main aesthetic clue about vitality and rhyme which was independent and interrelated through Wang's major three masterpieces: Tribute of Writing with Ease, Discussion of Chinese Calligraphy, Ode of Chinese Calligraphy .Besides, there was another main aesthetic clue among Wang's masterpieces, that was the caring for human. From the start of Wang's masterpieces, the aesthetic theories of affection, thoughts, vitality, thyme, talents and charm, which all reflected human's subjective and spiritual talents, endowments, personality and charm, these paid attention to personal values, free and independent personalities, publicized human's spirits and charm.At last, in the course of interpretation of Wang's calligraphy and aesthetics theories, I tried to research into the calligraphy theories and aesthetic actual values and significance which will direct Chinese Calligraphy creation in theory and practice. It demands us that we must pay attention to the communicated language of diligence and forms, especially to highlight creation subjects'spiritual charm, personal talents and values.Wang Sengqian's calligraphy theories and his aesthetic system are a reflection of aesthetic fashion of the times as well as the contribution to the times which was made by Wang Sengqian in the field of calligraphy theory and practice creation ,which making a great contribution to spiritual achievements of the times. Its values and significance are still twinkling in contemporary world.
