The critical theory of society is one of the major theoretical achievements of Habermas' thoughts. The highest level of critical theory of social is social evolution theory, namely, the reconstruction of historical materialism. In this paper, the author combs the background, reasons and programs of Habermas' reconstruction of historical materialism, and based on in-depth analysis of pros and cons of this theory, this paper further explains the contemporary values of historical materialism. This paper argues that Habermas' reconstructions of historical materialism are mainly in the following areas: on the one hand, the attempts he made of this theory which acclimate the trend of the times, his research methods and some theoretical perspectives open up a new space for us and he leaved a wealth of thinking of material. All of that has the very important meaningful and reference for the development of the theory of historical materialism for us in the modern era; the other hand, the basic theory route of his reconstruction theory is in violation of historical materialism. Habermas saw the certain conclusions of historical materialism were "outdated", and these conclusions needed to be theoretical innovation, supplement and enriched, but he mistakenly put this "conclusion outdated" to attribute to "the basic principles outdated ",so he fell into the negation of the entire historical materialism, even the subversion of historical materialism.
