Culture Revolution: Research On "Piano Preliminary Teaching Material"

Content:"The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution", which was held in 1960s-70s, is a long-term political movement. During that period of time, cultural and educational activities were greatly vandalized and suffered negative impact. "Unified Cultural Thoughts" was formed under the "extreme left" thought. Piano Art was constrained or even killed ruthlessly, it was considered as Capitalism and treated as waste to be sealed up or confiscated. In this period of time, same with other artists and following the political discipline and standards strictly, the piano artists compiled a set of teaching materials to meet the needs for piano art study of the young man, which could be considered as the fortunate part out of all the misfortunes."Preliminary Piano Teaching Material" is a textbook compiled in that period. It plays a significant role in piano basics and performance teaching, teaching activity performance as well as piano education structure formation. This teaching material, which is full of historical realism, embodies artists and educators'recognition of piano art and is of high historiography and artistic value in the sector of piano art. However, according to author's investigation, there has been rare theoretical research on this teaching material.In author's opinion, though seemed to be simple, this textbook is the milestone in the history of piano because of its special background. It could help us to understand the basis and direction of the piano music creation, especially the piano education development. Based on this, the author takes this teaching material as the research topic. This thesis is divided into 3 parts. In the first chapter, the development of piano textbooks and piano arts are reviewed, especially that of the "Preliminary Piano Teaching Material" which was born during the period of "The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution". Besides, according to the current investigation of this teaching material, the author makes her own research on this teaching material by utilizing the historiography theory, key point and method. In the second chapter, the author makes an all-round analysis of this teaching material from music techniques and cultural arts point of view and summarizes the characteristics of this teaching material in the aspects of subjects of the works, creation technique, theme of the works, etc. In the last chapter, the author analyzes the historiography value of this textbook in the period of "The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution" and points out that this book laid the foundation for the development of China's Piano Art in the recent 4 decades, and embodies the development of modern piano education and teaching materials.
