| Terms are the essential part of the modern science. Legal terms possess the most important position in legal science. It has a direct influence on the legal effect whether the legal terms are applied in an appropriate manner. It is almost impossible for jurisprudence, legal philosophy, legal hermeneutics as well as linguistics to become complete disciplines without touching on legal terms by study and interpretation. The most crucial issue for legal translation lies in how legal translators interpret the legal terms in different legal systems and convey and formulate the terms concerned in different languages, and lies in how they accurately turn the legal terms of source legal cultures into the counterparts, i.e., the translated terms, which can be accepted by the readers of the target language.The formative mechanism of legal English terms and the accurate reproduction from English into Chinese legal terms are dealt with from the aspects of cognition, interpretation and translation in this thesis. Legal English terms are the rich connotations of Anglo-American legal systems accumulated over thousand years. Whether the connotations of legal English terms can be conveyed accurately into the Chinese counterparts under Chinese legal system is the head-scratching thing for all the legal translators in all ages although they intend to convey all the profound meanings of the source legal terms to the best of their ability to meet the criteria of faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance.In view of the above-mentioned, this thesis discusses how to take different translation strategies such as functional equivalents, transliteration, paraphrase and neologism in different conditions to convey accurately the meanings of the legal English terms to the greatest degree, on the basis of the introduction of the features of legal English terms as well as the translation criteria for legal English terms.The thesis presents a brief introduction to the significance of the thesis, as well as some brief account about terminology and legal terms, the evolution and the significance of the terminology, and the features of legal English terms. The specific criteria for the translation of legal terms have been put forward such as precision in legal sense, conforming to the features of legal language and the lexical convention of target counterparts, and the equivalence in legal connotation, based on the introduction of the criteria of general translation in China and west. The thesis also deals with the requirements for legal translators and the different legal traditions that influence the translation of legal terms, on which the author tentatively put forward the translation strategies for legal English terms. In the author's opinion, the legal translators should try to convey the meanings of the legal English terms accurately as well as take care of the readability of the translated Chinese counterparts, by comprehensively making use of the translation strategies mentioned in the thesis, on the basis of a good command of the Chinese and Anglo-American legal systems as well as the features of legal terms.
