C-E Translation Of Scientific Terms In The Operating Manual Of ZP Series Polishing Machine

This thesis takes the six sections of The Operating Manual of ZP Series Polishing Machine from Zhuodi Machinery Co.,Ltd.in Foshan,Guangdong,as the research subject.This manual belongs to the scientific text,which is of the general characteristics of technical text,with lots of technical terms,especially terms of mechanical engineering.This study aims to use the theory of modern terminology and three principles of term translation to guide the translation of technical terms.Based on the analysis of the source text,this thesis will use the principle of terminology translation to select the proper translation methods for the source language text and to correctly convey the information to the users of ZP series polishing machine.Therefore,this thesis,with the help of the statistical analysis of the technical vocabulary and six characteristics of scientific term,divides the technical terms into three types,i.e.technical vocabulary,semi-technical vocabulary,and terminologization of glossary;then it discusses three major principles which should be followed in the terminology translation,including the principle of keeping concept accurate,the principle of being concise and understandable,the principle of being normalized,and finally it summarizes the translation methods of technical terms,and lists six translation methods,namely sequential word order translation,approaching from the reverse side,conception transformation,imitation,acceptance through common practice translation,metaphor translation.Sequential word order translation refers to that the majority of scientific terms can be translated in accordance with the natural order of Chinese,that is from left to right;Approaching from the reverse side,taking the meaning of terms as the starting point,use reverse thinking and translate scientific terms by means of “reverse translation” or “antipositive translation”;Conception transformation means that the translation of terms should change with the concepts of the terms in different fields.Imitation refers to that the original intention of some scientific terms is a complete match with the image of the target language,just imitate its original image when translate;Acceptance through common practice translation refers to that some of the terms translation should be translated only in accordance with the result of the long-term convention;Metaphor translation means that the translation of the terms sometimes needs a little bit image thinking,using metaphor method for translation.These six translation methods can present the scientific concepts of terms more clearly,enhanced the systematicness of the English translation of scientific terms,and avoided the ambiguity of the English translations in the standard.Results show that,due to the reasons that the meaning of English words will change with the contents,it is not easy for the Chinese-English terminology translation.Thus,when choosing the translation strategy,the translator should consider the structural features and the content to choose the strategy flexibly.In addition,during the translation process,thetranslator must know the characteristics of the technical terms,and combine it with the three principles of the technical terms translation,so as to provide a better version of the mechanical engineering terms.It is hoped that this thesis can provide some guidance for the translation of mechanical engineering texts.
