China is a multi-ethnic country with a long cultural history of five thousand years and with a vast expense, so China's local ethnic culture is very strong. Chu culture as a representative of culture in southern China is even a shining pearl among other China's traditional cultures. Studies on the Chu culture no only can give us a deep understanding of the Chinese traditional culture; but also can show the cultural treasures of our great motherland to the world, to make the world better understand China and Chinese culture. Chu culture has a long history. Starting from this point, this paper studies the basic form of dragon and phoenix graphic ornamentation in the Chu culture and its evolution law to clarify the symbols of dragon and phoenix graphic in Chu culture to facilitate future research and application.Cultural forms differ under different cultural backgrounds, under different geographical backgrounds, and in different times. The belief and worship of a nation on some kind of ornamentation is the best reflection of the national culture, so dragon and phoenix graphic ornamentation under the Chu culture is one of the best reflections of the Chu culture. From this starting point, this paper studies the dragon and phoenix graphic ornamentation. And the author hope that though the contrastive analysis of these pictures which are connected with their regional and periodical background, the basic form and characteristic of dragon and phoenix graphic ornamentation can be drown out. This article discusses two main points:first, through the analysis of the main suitable crowd of the graphic ornamentation and the major carriers at that time, and combined with the corresponding picture, the author draw out the characteristics of the basic form of the dragon and phoenix graphic ornamentation. The dragon and phoenix graphic can not only reflect the social patterns, their living background and their beliefs, but also can reflect the idea—Chu people worship phoenix, and the reason why they had a special love of phoenix; Second, the another focus of this paper is the contrastive analysis of the dragon and phoenix graphics combined with different times and different regions and figures out the periodical and geographical law of evolution of the dragon and phoenix graphic ornamentation. Contrastively analyzing the dragon and phoenix graphics in Chu area with central China, Sichuan and Wu Yue and figuring out the similarity and difference of these dragon and phoenix graphics in different regional and cultural background. Then making contrastive analysis of these dragon and phoenix graphics in the spring and Autumn Period with these in the previous period (Shang and Zhou dynasties), and with these in the afterward period (the Qin and Han period). And then to find out the law of evolution in different periods and the influence of the time to the basic forms of the dragon and phoenix graphics. Through the summary and analysis of the periodical and geographical law of evolution of the dragon and phoenix graphics, the author can gain a global view and deeper understanding of the dragon and phoenix graphic ornamentations.
