"Mulayana" is a new concept used by Master Nenghai. It has a close content with the triditional concept "hinayana" but its aim is to achieve Buddhahood. By using this word,we can aviod the contemptuous implication of the "hinayana"and emphasize its fundamental and initial meaning. The mulayana tripitaka includes Vinaya, Agama and Abhidharma, its practice involves trisiksa. In the history of the Chinese Buddhism, the mulayana is in the state of peripherization for a long time as a result of the decadent practice and the disdain of the classification. In modern China, due to the rising of the academic trend, the mulayana was gaining the importance again. But the academic prosperousness didn't directly mean the revivement of the practice tradition. His thoughts pay equal attention to trisiksa with emphasizing on stages and practice. It is a significant feature that master Nenghai values the mulayana practice.
