The establishment of the institution that instructs and researches on Han-tibetan Buddhist (in Chinese Pinyin "Han-zang Jiaoli Yuan") was an important and big event for both the Buddhism and Han-tibetan cultural exchange during the period of the Republic of China. This dissertation will sketch out the history and achievement of the institution in five chapters.The first chapter mainly reviews the correlative academic achievement and introduces the research methods used in the dissertation. Chapter two briefly discusses the background of the institution's establishment from three aspects: the sponsor Tai-xu, the supporter Liu-xiang's attempt to link up Han-tibetan and the new tendency of Buddhism research in modern times.Chapter three inspects the basic circumstance inside the institution, including the following: the arrangement of the institution, the administrative affair of the institution, the expenditure of the institution, the students and teachers of the institution, the curriculum of the institution, the management of the institution and so on. For the reason that the researches in the past have no specific and further analysis on the situation of students and teachers, this chapter will especially focus on this issue, hoping to describe the situation of the institution at that time.Chapter four summarizes the institution's activity in the Anti-Japanese War and its communication inside and outside the country. The last chapter briefly explains the effect and historical achievement of the institution. It had facilitated the Han-tibetan cultural exchange, harmonized the affection between Han and Tibetan, fostered many modern Buddhist experts and promoted the development of modern Buddhism.
