Study On Interesting Adolescent's CSL Textbook

As leaning Chinese is getting more and more popular in the world, the age of the learners are getting smaller and smaller; and the research on this field is attracted more and more attention of scholars. This study selected adolescents and the Chinese teaching materials for them as the object, and attempt to explore the interesting issue of teaching materials.Since the author is teaching in a public high school of the United States, the main research methods of this paper is observation, visiting and questionnaire survey. The participated students are those who involved in the study of Chinese language for high school elective courses. The research is doing by looking at actual teaching situations and using the experimental textbook, "Learn Chinese with Me". The whole research extends for one semester.The main part of this study was launched through two questionnaires, which were organized in the beginning and end of the semester. The main purpose of the first questionnaire is to know why the U.S. high school students want to learn Chinese language; and their initial impression of the experimental textbook. The results showed that:Most American young students know little about China and Chinese culture, which also verified the result of why they want to learn Chinese:Because they are interested in Chinese culture. Students'evaluation about "Learn Chinese with Me" is relatively high. They mainly focus on the rich content, acceptability of the content, fun classroom activities, as well as supporting materials such as the complementary CD. From this survey, we can draw the following conclusions:there should be additional teaching materials introducing cultural; selecting topics which are close to the students'life is an important aspect to attract students; variety of classroom activities should be designed which give students full of anticipation; Colorful pictures, multi-media technology has an important role in teaching aids.The questionnaire at the end of the semester showed that students' interest in learning Chinese language is still very high, but its reasons are not because of the textbook, but the culture, language itself as well as classroom activities. The uniqueness of the Chinese pronunciation and Chinese characters, as well as the diversity of Chinese culture and Western culture, is an important factor to stimulate students' interest. Teaching experience has proved that the once a week culture activities are very helpful for enhancing students'interest in learning. Therefore, we propose that teaching materials should be added to the contents of the Chinese culture which meets the needs of students to understand Chinese culture. Secondly, with regard to classroom activities, this study did some research on the effectiveness and interest of those classroom activities designed in the textbook and used in the class. Based on the results of the survey, we analyzed the advantage and disadvantage of each type of activities. Moreover, according to the actual teaching experience and survey results, "experience" culture activities are received by students; has played a positive role in promoting Chinese language teachingFinally, the study concluded four suggestions:First, the content of textbooks should be based on the students' former knowledge and experience, and design something "new" to meet the young students' strong "curiosity"; Second, the materials should be designed with a variety of classroom activities; these activities should be consistent with the characteristics of classroom instruction and meet the non-intentional language teaching and learning environment; Third, the difficulty should be strictly controlled because of their content; it can not be too difficult to a blow to the enthusiasm of the students, while encouraging style of language should appear in the textbooks from time to time; Fourth, the form of teaching materials should be diversified, it is recommended with supporting activities, such as manuals and multimedia materials.The innovation and features of this study are the following main points:1. combined with the practical teaching observation and questionnaire survey visit, conducted a five-month longitudinal study of CSLT for adolescent to provide some suggestions.2. with "interesting" as the starting point to explore the preparation and classroom activity design of teaching materials for adolescent.
