A Study Of The Reaction Of The Qing Government To The Aggression Of Japan Against Korea

In the late 19th century, the relationship of tribute system between China and Korea was impacted by the Western powers and Japan. Qing Government, with a view to national defense, was paying more and more attention to it. Qing Government, knew that she couldn't prevent Korea from invasion of west countries and Japan in traditional tribute system, and it was necessary to adjust the system. To oppose the aggression of Japan against the Korea, Qing Government adjusted her policy to Korea, following the changes of the situation:persuading Korea to open harbor, sending troops and governmental officials to Korea, signing treaty of Commerce with Korea. The new policy was making the modern international order of the Western enter into the traditional tributary system. However, this new policy hadn't been carried out well, because the old policy hadn't been altered radically, and gradually the new policy caused Qing Government getting into difficult position. The new policy of Qing Government was becoming more and more passive, and failed finally.This paper is divided into five chapters, and explores the consistency strategy of government Qing in the new international situation, and reveals those features by researching the reacting and response of Government Qing about the aggression of Japan against Korea.The first chapter is introduction. On the basis of former researches, the author introduces the research background, research significance and research methodologies and the structure of this paper.The second chapter introduces the process of the aggression of Japan against Korea. The process started from the Korea-Japan Treaty of Jianghua, and ended up with the Treaty of Japanese Annexation, which can be devided into three periods:the intervening of Japan in Korea, Korea becoming a Japanese protectorate, and The annexation of Korea by Japan.The third chapter and the fourth chapter are the key chapters of this paper. Based on the three stages of the aggression of Japan against Korea, these parts discuss the reaction and response of the Qing Government, and explore the changes of the attitude of Qing Government from positive to passive.The fifth chapter is the conclusion. This part systematically explores the response process of Government Qing about the aggression of Japan against Korea, analyzes the features and failures of the policies of Government Qing, showing the changes from actuality, practicability to inelasticity.
