Through his textual research of historical and folk works, Lu Xun, a great thinker and theorist of the contemporary literary history, wrote a wealth of works concerning the hot issues and questions in the folk literature and art from the historical perspectives of dialectic materialism. This thesis explores Lu Xun's materialistic thoughts about the folk literature and art from four aspects.First, it examines Lu Xun's revolutionary position about the folk literature and art that labors are the creators of culture, that any art and literature originates from the productive labor, and that the folk literature and art is the art and literature of producers. Then, it focuses on Lu Xun's idea that the folk literature and art create writers and literary works. Lu Xun asserts that great writers and painters are created in the context of the folk art and literature and that various types of literary forms originate from traditional culture and folklore. It also gives an analysis of Lu Xun's writing, which covers the relationship between Lu Xun's novels and the folk literature, the relationship between Lu Xun's sketches and the folk literature, and the relationship between Lu Xun's essays and the folk literature. And last, it explores Lu Xun's defence of and contributions to the folk literature:He advocates taking down mulianxi in shorthand, promoting the folk literature, and making studies of the folk literature. This these states in its conclusion that Lu Xun's writings are deeply and closely related to the folk literature and art, which highlights Lu Xun's positions, viewpoints, and spirits and achievements in writing.
