As the theme-a study of the colored paintings and its conservation of the Ningshougong Garden in the Palace Museum-described, this dissertation aims to, take example for the Ningshougong Garden, explain the necessity and importance of the colored paintings'conservation work, to discuss how to find the best appropriate solution with heritage conservation theory in practice, to conclude the general principles, procedures and methods for conserving colored paintings of the architecture complex in the Palace Museum.The dissertation consists of four chapters. First chapter:State the dissertation's meaning and the general condition of the studies involved. Second chapter:Collect and catalog the historic documentation relating to the constructions and restorations of the garden, analyze the original period these paintings drawn, and explain the architectural characteristics of all the courts in the Ningshougong Garden. Third chapter:Research the various styles and stages of the existing colored paintings in the garden, analyze the pattern characters, drawing themes, colors and technics of the palace-style Sushi colored paintings drawn in the middle and late Qing Dynasty whose evolvement progress and typical characters will be concluded and summarized, and then realize that the artistic particularities of the colored paintings contain huge relics values. Fourth chapter: Abstract the core ideology from the contemporary heritage conservation theories, propose that authenticity and completeness of cultural heritage are the core for recognizing and protecting cultural heritage values. Then, by using the core ideology of cultural heritage conservation, analyze and assess the applicability and effect of the conservation methods used in the contemporary period, and make assessment on the values, including authenticity, values and conservation conditions of the colored paintings in the Ningshougong Garden, on the basis of which, propose the appropriate the conservation principles and methods for the colored paintings of the garden. Finally, form the general principles, protective methods and technique measures which are propitious to the current conditions of the colored paintings of the Palace Museum, and on the premise of discussing the necessity and importance of the conservation methods including minor restoration, reconstruction, protection by taking away the colored paintings and preserving it in storehouse, restoration in accordance with the historic condition, and air-proof protection, propose the applicable field of these conservation methods.
