A Practice Report On An Escort Interpreting Of The Trip To The Palace Museum

This practice report is about an escort interpreting at the Palace Museum.The task described in the report concerns the escort interpreting for Grant,a sociolinguist from University of Toronto on August 25 th 2019.Typical cases in the escort interpreting at the Palace Museum are introduced and analyzed.This report is composed of five chapters,concerning task description,process description,preparations for interpreting,case analyses and a summary respectively.The first chapter is a description of the origin and introduction of the customer and interpreter.Chapter two demonstrates the procedure of the task,including preparation,interpreting and feedback from the customer and the docent.Chapter three concerns the interpreting preparations including the Transcendence Theory of Benjamin Walter and his interpreting thoughts,collection of background knowledge,preparation of word list,etc.The Transcendence Theory emphasizes the transcendence of the target language over the source language,including both the form and the content.His translation thoughts are mainly embodied in three aspects: language forest,tangent with circle and fragments of a vessel.In chapter four— case study,the author analyzes the specific application of interpreting strategies under the guidance of the theory through several examples,such as the interpreting of the names of ten animals in the Supreme Harmony Hall,the poem describing the sceneries of thousand dragons spitting water,the four— character idioms describing the psychological state of tourists,etc.At the same time,the author also analyzes the difficulties and problems encountered in the process of interpreting,such as how to deal with the differences between Chinese and English expression habits,how to deal with the redundant words and how to better spread the traditional Chinese ideas in interpreting.In the fifth chapter,the author makes an in-depth reflection on the qualities that an excellent interpreter should possess,such as patriotic feelings,flexible thinking,appropriate words and deeds through reviewing and summarizing the experience of this practice.
