Chinese painting is called "the painting" from ancient times. As its name suggests, ancient Chinese painting is relying mainly on color. When figure painting became the mainstream art form in Song and Yuan Dynasties, the heavy colored painting lost its favor with people. As an important style, it is constantly pursed by many artists. In recent years, great achievements have been made in the study of heavy colored paintings. The booming Modern heavy-colored painting is a prominent school of the Gongbi painting which is a traditional Chinese realistic painting characterized by fine brushwork and close attention to detail. It derives from traditional Chinese heavy-colored painting and frescoes and develops into its unique feature. With its comprehensive and modern characteristics, heavy-colored painting is regarded as a manifestation of opening Chinese painting. New material and new technique have provided great room for its creation. Thought it is relatively a new trend, it has inherited many nutrients from traditional paintings. The tradition of Chinese painting is a vast and sophisticated concept. We should not only study its exterior form but also the interior spirit from the aesthetic perspective. Chinese heavy-colored painting is at a turning point of its development. The process of transformation involves changes from traditional view to modern views of creation, and innovation of material and techniques. How to make the traditional art form to suit the taste of modern audience has posed a great challenge for our artists. With the rapid development of heavy-colored painting, artists will use color, the most accessible art form, to undertake the task of renovation.This thesis attempts to explore the characteristics of modern heavy-colored painting in terms of color use, materials chosen, form of creation, etc. These features are expected to have implications for the future creation and promote new renovation.
