Yu Pingbo is one of the pioneers in the Chinese vernacular poetry writing during the period of the May Fourth Movement. His new poetry has distinct characteristics in the ideological significance and art form, and is an example of the New Poetry during the early period. The creation of the New Poetry by Yu, varying nobility into ordinary, is one attempt in modern Chinese literary history and has far-reaching significance for the promotion of the New Poetry's development. Meanwhile, Yu also has made outstanding contributions to the building of the theory of poetry. His proposal about the concept of poetry has a certain perspective, which plays an important role in guiding and standardizing the development of new poetry. However, there exists irreconcilable crack between his poetic theory and creative practice, which is closely related to the historical environment and the poet's personality. This paper expects to make an in-depth commentary and research on the achievements of the New Poetry by Yu and his contradictions, by analyzing the works in the four new poetry volumes by Yu, summarizing his contributions in the creation and the theory of the new poetry writing, and explaining his conflicts on the conversion in creation from the old and new verse and poetry theory.
