In the last decade of Qing Dynasty, a remarkable political phenomenon is that the government and society had reached a consensus for the implementation of the"autonomy". With the New Deal's constitutional reform in the end of Qing Dynasty, the"autonomy"movement started vigorously. In the early Years of Republic of China,the government basically followed the Qing Dynasty continued to implement the Local Autonomy.And the Local Autonomy of Nantong can be regarded as a model in the Later Qing Dynasty, it's achievement commanded the attention of the world in that time。The Local Autonomy of Nantong had been developed for 30 years ,experienced imperial era,military era, and the Kuomintang era .It started with the declining of royal authority ,and gained a great development late in the early Republic of China's chaos .When the army of Kuomintang occupied the south-east of China, the Local Autonomy of Nantong finally failed accompanied by the death of ZhangJian.This article attempts to analyze various aspects of specific reasons for the failure of the Local Autonomy of Nantong , and try to gain a more objective and comprehensive review of that period of history .
