The three ballet dramas that Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky composes in all his life are Swan Lake, The Sleeping beauty and The Nutcracker, which are still the first choice of ballet performance all over the world though they were composed more than 100 years ago. Swan Lake is the first one of them, in which the composer completed a major reform of the ballet drama. It has become a milestone in the history of dance works and is synonymous with ballet music. Its superb writing skills, perfect music images and moving story make this ballet drama tatally natural and touch deeply the heart of audience throuhout the world.By means of historical review and works analysis, this paper focuses on the style features of Swan Lake and its creation techniques to analyze the reasons for its far-reaching impact on the development of ballet in the world and affirm furtherly Tchailovsky's irreplaceable position in the field of ballet creation.The paper consists of five chapters. In order to gain a further and complete understanding about Swan Lake, Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 are mainly about the origin and development of ballet drama, the development of ballet drama in European countries in the 19th century as well as the development of ballet drama in Russia.Based on the life of Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky and the composition background of Swan Lake, Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 analyze the musical features of Swan Lake from the macroscopic and microcosmic points of view. The macroscopic point of view covers area attribute, national identity and drama property while the microcosmic point of view analyzes internal elements of creation, including its development approach of theme, the layout of tone and color, the use of multi-nationalization and so on. Finally, Chapter 5 summarizes the musical features of Swan Lake as well as its historical position and affirms Tchaikovsky's deep impact in the field of ballet creation.
