| As an important social practice, translation activity can meet the demand of human beings efficiently and so it has the property of value. How to develop translation practice and criticism better depends on the guidance of value theory and value philosophy. As one of the basic theory of philosophy study, the value theory which mainly deals with the issue of needs between subject and object is related to the value of nature, formation, criteria and criticism. The application of theories and methods of value philosophy in the field of translation value is not a study of translation strategies and principles but rather a study of translation value itself and a generalization of the types and manifestations of the values of literary translation and pragmatic translation. The purpose of this application is not to answer "what to translate" and "how to translate", but to construct scientific view of translation value by exploring the ways of "why to translate" and "how to use translation".A review of the history of translation theory and practice both in China and in Western countries indicates that not only the values of translation but also the study of translation value hasn't been fully recognized and got academic treatment. Linguistics-based science of translation and traditional translation theory mainly focus on the possibility and the transferring process of translation while faithfulness and equivalence view of translation always places the source text and the writer in top position, which leads to the devaluation of translation. Anyway, reposition of translation value has been a common trend since the late 1970s and translation studies are rising into an independent discipline, especially in today's value construction, both literary translation and pragmatic translation will play active and positive roles.This thesis falls into six parts. The first part is the introduction of this thesis. It points out the background, research aim and significance of this study. Chapter 1 mainly introduces the definition of value, the emergence of value theory and then further describes some representative translators'opinions of values of translation both at home and abroad. Chapter 2 makes a multi-dimensional analysis of values of translation. It presents a general view on the intrinsic nature of translation which includes social value, historical value, cultural value, linguistic value and creative value. After that, it further gives an account of instrumental and purposive value of translation from philosophical aspect. As a result, we may find that value formation is embodied in the process of translation activity. Chapter 3 starts by the dispute between science and art to explore what values literary translation have. As an artistic creation, the artistic value of literary translation involves in the creation process of literary images and figures. Cultural development promotes social advancement, for the necessary part of cultural inheritance and communications, literary translation has cultural value. And different literary forms display different value orientation, therefore literary translation also possesses mixed value. Chapter 4 discusses the most prominent features of pragmatic translation, namely, practicality and wide application, and then defines the classification of pragmatic translation. Based on Newmark's Text Typology, this chapter points out the different functions of pragmatic translation and further offers an analysis of translation values of informative, expressive and appellative texts. Chapter 5 is the conclusion of this thesis. It mainly explores the significance of values of translation and puts forward some suggestions for further study.
