A Tentative Study On Chinglish In Chinese-English Translation

As a bridge among different languages, translation plays an important role in facilitating the international exchange of politics, economy and cultures. Chinglish is a common phenomenon that exists in Chinese-English translation. The major causes of Chinglish are the linguistic differences and cultural differences between the Chinese and English languages. Though English is being popularized in China, not many translators are really proficient in it, and that is why Chinglish becomes a serious problem that hampers intercultural communication. Therefore, it is meaningful to explore this problem, and come up with some solutions.Many scholars have recently done a lot of researches about Chinglish. But as far there haven't been systematic theories on Chinglish problems in C-E translation. Through contrastive analysis and error analysis, that is, cross-linguistic analysis and cross-cultural linguistic analysis, the author of this thesis points out that the occurrence of Chinglish is due to the linguistic interference of Chinese, the cultural differences and the discrepancies between the Chinese and the English thinking modes. To sum up, Chinglish, as an interlanguage, with its own features, is systematic and unavoidable for Chinese learners of English. Chinglish easily steps forward in C-E translation, which requires the translators not only to master Chinese and English, but also to be familiar with the language usage, thinking modes and life background of the people of English-speaking countries. It is also necessary to increase English-related subjects setting and encourage students to read widely, in order to reduce Chinglish gradually and produce idiomatic English translation.This thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter serves as an introduction which gives a brief introduction of Chinglish, including the origin and evolution of Chinglish and the difference between Chinglish and China English, the significance of the study, the research methodology and the scope of the thesis. Chapter Two includes a brief introduction of Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence theory and interlanguage theory, which constitute the theoretical basis of this thesis. Chapter Three categorizes the manifestation of Chinglish on linguistic and cultural dimensions. Chapter Four makes a contrastive study of the main differences between Chinese and English from the aspects of language and culture. The differences, in the author's view, constitute the main causes of Chinglish in C-E translation. Chapter Five offers some suggestions for reducing Chinglish in C-E translation. Chapter Six summarizes the theoretical studies and research findings in the thesis and figures out the limitations of this study.
