This MTI project includes a translation of "Playing the role of’cultural expert’: teachers of ethnic difference in Britain and Australia" and a commentary. Published in the Oxford Review of Education, which is one of the leading international education journals in the U.K., this article examines the experiences of teachers of ethnic difference in Britain and Australia by conducting separate interviews and carrying on a qualitative analysis of the data. The article argues that the early-career immigrant teachers in Britain are positive about their positioning as cultural experts, while the mid-career Australian Indigenous teachers find some problems in playing the role of cultural experts. It concludes by advocating further education and training of teachers and recruitment of ethnic minority teachers. The commentary discusses the translating difficulties and methods. To keep the originality, the translator has searched on the Internet and in the library, but has not found any Chinese version of the source text.The original text mainly belongs to the informative text type, so the translator adopts skopos theory to carry out the project. Skopos theory includes skopos rule, fidelity rule, and coherence rule, as well as the model of "function plus loyalty". In order to transmit accurately the information of the original text, some parallel texts and footnotes are used to translate the epithets. Due to the differences between English and Chinese, the strategies of embedding, cutting and recasting are adopted to translate some long sentences for fidelity and readability.The project has three purposes. Firstly, it can enrich the translator’s experience and help the translator apply what has been learned to the translation practice. Secondly, the translation is expected to provide some reference for Chinese scholars and researchers in the field of education. Thirdly, the critical commentary points out several translating difficulties and strategies, which may be helpful to other translators when they do similar translation work.
