The Study About Weng Fanggang's Thought In Calligraphy From His Inscriptions Letters And Anthologies

Weng Fanggang (1733-1818) was a famous calligrapher in the Qing dynasty, he was also an epigrapher and a poet. Weng had made significant contributions in many fields such as calligraphy, classics, poetries, epigrapy textual and left us a larger number of books including collections of writings, poems, inscriptions, prefaces, notes, summaries, letters which more than any Ming Qing scholars in quantity. However, very few people are concerned about him in recent years. This paper attempts to conduct a systematic study from his inscriptions, letters and anthologies in order to find out the intrinsic motivation about the recession and rise from calligraphy to stelae.Mainly include the following aspects:1, The thought of Weng Fanggang were formed in the larger environment of epigraphy emergence which has the inner link with the Chinese philology It was also a product that lining with the historical trend.2, Weng Fanggang proposed that Chinese calligrapy is based on Zhuan Li and respected regular script. His thought corrected the weak single calligraphic style of Zhao, Dong and revitalized the calligraphy at that time.3, His series of thought pointed directly to stelae and had been absorbed by other artists later. It is no exaggeration to say that Weng Fanggang, Ruan Yuan, Qian Yong and the other scholars promoted the development of calligrapy together.4, The rigorous scholarship and pragmatic attitude of Weng Fanggang still inspire us today.5, Point out the limitations of Weng Fanggang's thought. He was too stricted to himself that his strong tradition skill suppressed the creativity and his works were lack of vitality.
