There is a close relationship between Hai faction calligraphy and the development of Shanghai.After the Opium War, Shanghai opened her door at Nov.17,1843 and became to the most dynamic metropolic in China quickly. With her unique Eastern culture and the charm of modern Western culture, lots of poets and literary men around the country gathered to Shanghai to make their lives.Hai faction calligraphy was born under such environment. In such commercial circumstances, it's necessary that the purpose of calligraphy creations is changed from the calligraphers'aspiration to how to live.It's difficult for calligraphers to make their lives by their selves in such turbulent society. So they began to organize the association activities frequently. In this paper, the period from the forties of the nineteenth century to the twenties and the thirties of the twentieth century is the research scope.The overall calligraphy associations cases and the individual calligrapher cases is the research method.This paper also classifies and analyzes the mode of scholars gathering, the evolution of modern associations and the activities of the important Hai faction calligraphers who join the associations and summarizes their impact on Hai faction calligraphy. Finally, this paper makes a conclusion about the commercialization of the associations of Hai faction calligraphers and the marketization of Hai faction calligraphy. Hope this paper is helpful for the further research on Hai faction calligraphy.
