Adverbs are a relatively complicated word category in the Chinese language. Chinese adverbs are generally abstract in meaning and flexible in usage, therefore making them difficult for foreign students to master. In accordance with the theory of inter-language and error analysis, this thesis is aimed to define common errors based on the comprehensive study of the corpus. Firstly, a total of 343 adverbs are selected for discussion from "Glossary for HSK" (Committee of HSK,2001) and "Lectures On Adverbs In Modern Chinese"(Xiaoqi Li,2005). Secondly, statistics gathered by software is analyzed in various ways. On that basis, the error types of learners in using Chinese adverbs are summarized and the causes of these errors are explored. The results demonstrated that students at intermediate and advanced levels, whether they were Japanese, Korean, European, or American, most commonly made errors in using Chinese adverbs by omitting structural elements, "misadding the adverb", "mis-using the synonym" and "mis-ordering with the subject". These errors have many root causes, such as a negative influence of the mother language and the target language, improper explanation by the teachers, incorrect learning strategies used by the students, and unsuitable compilation of textbooks and reference books.Ultimately, this thesis is an overall study of these errors made by overseas students at intermediate and advanced level in using Chinese adverbs. Furthermore, in light of the error types and causes mentioned above, several suggestions are put forward, in order to improve the teaching of Chinese adverbs.
