The films of the Greek filmmaker--Theo Angelopoulos, have never been shown to the public in the cinema in mainland China. However, a group of his fans have formed among the moviegoers. They admire the typical film style of Angelopoulos very much, including the vivid image, music with unique lingering charm, deep poetry and the responsibility concerning history, politics and reality. All of those elements are enjoyed and studied by fans or freshmen of filmology, though their work is limited within a level of direct watching experiences. Most people feel the beauty of the film without knowing how the beauty comes out. This thesis will start from introducing the background of 1970s'film tide--political Modernism, in which Theo Angelopoulos began his career (Chapter 1). By analyzing his basic technique of audio-visual language and its effect, Chapter 2 explains how the modernistic formulation works, how to accomplish his own special images and what the meaning is behind that. This kind of form-to-content study method is just like a surgery on movies not only to watch the skin but also to look into the hypoderm, vessel and bones. Theo Angelopoulos has paid a lot of attention to the medium characteristic and power of film (Chapter 3). So after encountering the social and historical and cultural elements beyond, this odyssey of researching and studying will set out from his films and return to them. Just like what has been said in the movie:In my end is my beginning.
