Sacrifice is a phenomenon in intimate relationship in which one gives up imminent needs in order to improve the relationship or to benefit his/her partner. Co-dependency is a personality characteristic in individual sacrificial action. While whether sacrifice and co-dependency is beneficial to intimate relationship is under dispute, this research presents sacrifice willingness and sacrifice motivation as two dimensions to study how co-dependency, sacrifice willingness and sacrifice motivation influence the quality of intimate relationship.Studyâ… .is Quantitative research.Tools:the Chinese Co-dependency Assessment Tool,Motivations for Care-giving scale,Willingness to Sacrifice questionnaire,Intimate elements scale,Intimate relationship Satisfaction scale.The results are as follows:No significiant difference among gender, educational level, state of relationship on co-dependency characteristic, but with prominent difference on age and marriage plan.Males have significant higher marks on sacrifice motivation than females do. Higher marks of sacrifice willingness, approach sacrifice motivation from subjects in relationship than those from single subjects.Significant higher marks of sacrifice willingness from subjects with marriage plan than those from subjects with no marriage plan.Higher intimate relationship quality from subjects with marriage plan than that from subjects with no marriage plan. In intimate relationship satisfaction, subjects in love rank highest, singles with no relationship experience rank middle and singles with relationship experience rank lowest with prominence.Consistent with the hypothesis, there are significant positive correlation between approach sacrifice motivation and intimate relationship quality, negative correlation between co-dependency and intimate relationship quality, positive correlation between overall co-dependency characteristic and avoid sacrifice motivation.Prominent predictive effect from co-dependency and approach sacrifice motivation on intimate relationship satisfaction, also from approach sacrifice motivation and avoid sacrifice motivation.Studyâ…¡is Qualitative research.By semi-structural interview, it is found that there are different levels of sacrificial action in intimate relationship. The response from sacrifice and reward from intimacy is related to intimate perception. The effect of sacrifice on improving relationship quality and enhancing happiness depends on the phase of intimate relationship and partner's perception of sacrifice. Sacrifice from females entails more study to distinguish whether it is real sacrifice or victimization to anchor or frustrate their partner.
