Jiangxi school whose members primarily modeled their poems after Huang Tingjian's creation was prevailing in poetic circles at the end of North Song Dynasty and hence became a major poetry school of that time. As a comparatively representative member of this poetry school, Xie Guo preserved the classical style of Jiangxi school:thin-hard and strange on one hand. On the other, however, he also created his own artistic taste, that is, refreshing and pleasing. Thus the purpose of this thesis is a case study of Xie and his poems. The primary concerns of the author could be concluded in the following aspects: (â…°) to explore the life and circle of friends of Xie, (â…±) to study the origin and development of editions of the anthology of Xie which is titled Zhu-you Ji and (â…²) to analyze the content in his poems and to summarize the style of his creation. The thesis includes four parts. In Chapterâ… , according to the evidence research, the author gives an outline on Xie's family background, his own life, and the association between him and his friends. In Chapterâ…¡, the author traces the origin and development of editions of Zhu-you Ji above all, and then discusses the contributory causes to the formation of editions. Next, the author corrects some obvious mistakes on several kinds of editions by the methodology of collation. Besides, some lost works of Xie are also compiled in this chapter. At the beginning of Chapterâ…¢, the author explores the social background of Xie's life and his own political inclination. The second part of this chapter is an overview of the content within Xie's poems. Thirdly, the author probes into the distinguishing characteristics of Xie's Shan-Shui poems and Yong-Wu poems respectively. Finally, the author discusses the reflection of the style of Jiangxi school in Xie's own poems. As for the Chapterâ…£, it is an evaluation of Xie's achievement. In the first place, the author examines the estimation of Xie's poetic accomplishment from his generation and after ages. The second part of this chapter is a comparison between Xie Guo and Xie Yi and both of them were known as the Two Xie at their time. In the end, the author re-estimates the status of Xie in the history of Chinese literature and makes an evaluation of Zhu-you Ji in the area of historical accounts.
