Zhan Jingfeng is one of the representatives of the Huizhou culture in Jiajing,Longqing and Wanli period in the Ming Dynasty and a famous calligrapher andpainter, painting and calligraphy theorist and collector. On the basis of absorbing theresearch outcome of senior scholars and counterparts, with the experience, socialintercourse, collections, calligraphy critics and calligraphic art of Zhan Jingfeng as thestarting point, combined with the social, economic and cultural background in thelater Ming Dynasty, this paper tried to explore the calligraphic thoughts, aestheticinterest and calligraphy critical methods of Zhan Jingfeng. In addition to collectingthe anthologies, local chronicles, epitaphs and other literature and calligraphy andpainting works as the basis of discussion, this paper was based on two works of ZhanJingfeng, namely Zhan Dong Tu Xuan Lan Bian and Zhan Shi Xing Li Xiao Bian.The paper is divided into five parts. Combined with the background of the later MingDynasty, the first part introduced the family background of Zhan Jingfeng and hiscareer full of twists and turns, and outlined his works. The second part explored hissocial intercourse through prevailing of collection in the later Ming Dynasty withobserving his collection view and collections as the main line. The third part exploredhis calligraphy critical standards and aesthetic interest through his critics for thecalligraphic style “advocating the meaning”, his objective and fair assessment to ZhaoMengfu’s calligraphy and his comments to the calligrapher in the Ming Dynasty. Thefourth part studied his calligraphic thoughts from following the ancients, skills, talent,pen movement and other aspects. The fifth part explored the profound and innovativecalligraphic art of Zhan Jingfeng and the romantic feature of his cursive script fromthe evolution of calligraphy and the collision and fusion of classicism andromanticism in the Late Ming Dynasty.
