Bernardo Bertolucci, the famous Italian director, is never to be neglected all over the world. His movies are known to be grand narrative in feature and artistic in erotic description. This dissertation explores his artistic way of creation in three parts in the hope to systematically identify his unique feature and unveil the unending enlightenments that he gives to the movie workers and learners, thus letting them understand him better as well as his works for the fake of future studies. Except the systematic studies on the artistic features of his movies, this dissertation also adopts Freudian psychoanalysis to illustrate"sex"as one of the themes of his movies. It also criticizes his wrong interpretations on the eastern cultures with a western perspective. The first part is developed to state clear his life experiences and the causes that result in his unique style, of which the former counts so much in his feature studies. His works and the corresponding time of the works are all listed clearly with the explanation on the influences from Italian neo-realism and French neo-romanticism. Young Bertolucci was once the assistant of the Italian director Pasolini, who has been a radical Marxist. Under such influence of Communism, Bertolucci's movies cast the feature of being poetic and critical. Another influencing figure is the representative of French New Wave, Godard, who has also been a director with Communism beliefs and whose image style has greatly influenced Bertolucci. He then starts to explore the inner charms of the characters that have confusions inside psychologically. The second part is of great importance and is mainly on the theme of his movies, which is further developed into three parts: the strong political color, sublimation of sexism and oriental charms. In his movies, politics is merged with sex, of which his political ideals are hidden behind. No matter whether the large event settings or the detailed ones, his political ideals can be identified. He is trying to express his political aspirations and revolutionary enthusiasm. On the second theme, sex, this dissertation explores it from Freudian psychoanalysis, with its contents and its influences on the movies. Among which, Bertolucci has himself claimed the power of subconsciousness.Sex has been an eternal theme of movies. Through psychoanalysis, Bertolucci breaks the general linear way of characters development, so as to explore the inner potential power of them. It does not cast sex for the sake of sex, instead, it is sublimated. Another important theme in his movies is the eastern view with the mysterious culture. With The Last Emperor as a start, Bertolucci has made three movies concerning eastern culture in succession in the hope to make up for the loss and confusion of western culture with eastern charm and mystery. Through introducing the well-known movies The Last Emperor and Little Buddha, this dissertation further illustrates the eastern dreams of Bertolucci. In the third part, his artistic style is analyzed through the discussion on the narrative features and audio-visual language. The narrative features are analyzed from grand narrative, circle-structured narrative, movie deconstructing movie method, and the narrative perspectives. Among these, his movie deconstructing movie method is worth mentioning, which leads his audiences to a journey of classic movies while enjoying the new ones. On his audio-visual language, the screen modeling language, shot forms and music as the adjuvant means are to be explained in the dissertation. In the fourth part, it is suggested that the shot language system of his movies complies with his thoughts. To illustrate this, the dissertation starts from the cross-cultural theory and comes up with oriental theories and Post-colonialism. His misunderstanding of eastern cultures is criticized, especially his way of looking at eastern cultures with his typical western logic. Case studies concerning eastern cultures are to be conducted. However, his way of expressing wrong thoughts through the right shot language system is to be praised and learned by Chinese directors, that is, the unity of shot language with thoughts.
